OUR ETNA COLLECTION: ARTISANAL INDOOR/OUTDOOR FURNITURE, HANDPAINTED IN ITALY, THAT NEVER HAS TO BE COVERED.
Our hand glazed ETNA ceramic collection of volcanic rock indoor/outdoor tables has been a favorite with our customers ever since we first introduced it in 2018.
In this post, we’d like to share with you the story of where it comes from and how it’s made…but before we do…were any of you who are reading this post at this party we threw to celebrate the launch of our ETNA collection at Las Vegas Market?
That’s our CEO, Gary Pettitt, the founder of Seasonal Living, in the bottom right of this image, by the way. He’s looking so happy – no doubt helped by the free flowing champagne and all of the industry friends and interior designers that came by C-494 to help him celebrate this major launch!
Since several new pieces have been added to our ETNA collection for 2020, we thought it would be interesting for you to see how our ETNA collection is made, and the long journey it has to go through to get from inside Mt. Etna to your home or resort property!
First of all, let’s talk about Mt. Etna itself, where the lava rock used in the production of our ETNA collection, originates.
Mt. Etna is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the world’s most active volcanoes to this day. It is located on the east coast of Sicily, on the southern tip of Italy, in the metropolitan city of Catania.
It is by far the largest of the three active volcanoes in Italy, being about two and a half times the height of the next largest, Mount Vesuvius. It has erupted numerous times, including March of 2017 (injuring members of a BBC crew) and Dec. 24th, 2018, injuring several people and forcing evacuations!
Despite the frequent eruptions, it is still a major tourist attraction and people come from all over the world to hike its flanks during the spring, summer and fall, and to ski its flanks during the winter.
Mining of the volcanic stone is a major economic activity in the city of Catania.

Once the volcanic rock is mined, it is transported to the central region of Italy, known as Umbria, where the raw grey lava stone slabs are shaped, sanded, and readied for the painting and ceramic firing process.
As you can see below, each of our ETNA collection tables is handpainted by an individual Italian artisan, and no two are alike. They are genuine works of one of a kind art.
Once they are painted, they go through 3 firings at over 1000 C and then three 12 hour curing periods.
Once this process is complete, the surfaces are as durable as the volcanic stone body, and they can be left outside in any kind of weather, without being covered.
As this image from our online catalog shows, our ETNA collection tables can be customized, and they come with a 10+ year warranty, almost unheard of for indoor/outdoor furniture.
FINISHES:
Our ETNA collection tables are available in two beautiful handpainted glazed ceramic finishes, a sophisticated grey and mustard yellow combination called SAHARA GOLD and a vibrant turquoise blue and deep green combination called OCEANS COLLISION.
For quantity orders, other colors can be specified.
We can’t wait to show you the ETNA collection pieces that are new for Spring 2020, starting with our new cocktail tables, available in two sizes.
We are also introducing two new dining tables, a 60″ RND and a 48″ SQ.
Lastly, our new ETNA *C* occasional table, is the perfect complement to any indoor/outdoor seating arrangement.
We will be showcasing examples of all of these new pieces in our newly redesigned and expanded showroom at the upcoming High Point Market in April, and will also have them on display in our highly curated show at Boston Design Edge at the Boston Design Center at the end of March.
Lastly, here is a custom ETNA dining table, specified by Ft. Lauderdale based interior designer, Dawn Elise of Dawn Elise Interiors, for a client’s poolside outdoor dining area.
